Ghost Hunt At Unicorn Theatre & Abbey Buildings, Abingdon 24th May

£15.00£30.00

Due to popular demand we have secured another date for this location. Join us on Saturday 24th May 2025!

The Abbey Buildings in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, are enduring remnants of the once-powerful Abingdon Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded around 675 AD during the Anglo-Saxon period. As one of England’s oldest and most influential monasteries, Abingdon Abbey thrived throughout the Middle Ages, gaining a reputation for its wealth, extensive landholdings, and contributions to scholarship.

Originally constructed from wood, the abbey’s buildings were later rebuilt in stone following the Norman Conquest of 1066. By the height of its influence, the abbey was one of the largest and richest religious institutions in the country. However, in 1538, under Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries, Abingdon Abbey was disbanded. Much of its grand structure was systematically demolished, and its stones were repurposed for local construction.

We will have access to the Unicorn Theatre, Long Gallery, & Checker Hall, all dating from the 13th to 15th centuries. These buildings exhibit a rich tapestry of medieval architectural styles and have been thoughtfully repurposed over the centuries for various secular uses, functioning as granaries, schools, and private residences. The Checker Hall and Long Gallery, in particular, are distinguished as some of the finest and most well-preserved examples of 13th-century domestic architecture in England, offering a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship and design of the medieval period.

Today, the Abbey Buildings offer a rare glimpse into the rich monastic history and architectural heritage of medieval England, preserving the legacy of what was once one of the nation’s most prestigious religious centres.
