Most of the world’s soapstone comes from Kisii, a region in the western highlands of Kenya renowned for its master artisans and carvers. The stone contains talc, giving it a soft, smooth texture—hence the name “soapstone.” Before carving, the stone is soaked in water to soften it further, making it easier to work with. Artisans shape the stone using a hammer and chisel, then apply colour. A smaller knife, called a kisu, is used to engrave intricate designs or illustrations.
