About The Bear Hotel, Wantage: Overlooking the historic Market Place for nearly 500 years, The Bear Hotel has been a beloved landmark at the heart of the town since the 16th century. The building itself is Grade II listed, a striking example of 17th century architecture remodelled around 1720, with its distinctive red Flemish bond brick and early Georgian detailing. A fixture in Wantage since the time of Henry VIII and owned by Arkell’s Brewery, The Bear has evolved over the centuries from a resting place for weary travellers into the social hub of the town. Today it is home to an award-winning restaurant and en-suite rooms — each full of character and charm. Warm, welcoming and steeped in history, The Bear is a venue that feels both special and familiar — exactly the spirit we wanted for our anniversary celebration.
